One of the top most senior members of the Parliamentary Budget Office, Sahir Khan, has announced to quit the job to start working against for his old boss, i.e. Kevin Page. One of the two assistant parliamentary budget officers, Mr. Khan, has announced to soon join Mr. Page at the University of Ottawa, where they are anticipated to head the new office of fiscal studies that will release analytical reports on government spending similar to those of the PBO.

Mr. Khan has an impressive portfolio in public service as he used to advise the Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, on budget and spending issues. Before that, Mr. Khan worked as a restructuring specialist for Deloitte Consulting in New York. Mr. Khan was among the three men recommended by Mr. Page to be the next PMO after the retirement of his five-year term. However, the Conservative government instead chose Jean-Denis Fréchette, i.e. an economist who has spent the past 27 years with the Library of Parliament.

In his departing email sent on Friday, Mr. Khan alleged that “I wish to thank my colleagues and clients for making the last five years among the best of my professional career. I wish the new PBO, Jean-Denis Fréchette, all the best as he develops and implements his vision to support parliamentarians and Canadians with financial and economic analysis.” During a separate interview, Mr. Khan commented on working again with Mr. Page, asserting that “we have that feel of a start-up,” adding that “there’s a potential to build something that’s lasting and hopefully with impact.”
