The U.S. Marshals Service has recently mentioned in a press release that it has no reason to keep track of or arrest convicted sex offender, Michael Stanley, who slithered away from Canadian authorities after removing his ankle bracelet last week. Acting deputy chief, Jack Williams, stated that “we have no reason to monitor him because he’s not suspected of any crimes in the United States,” and that “we don’t monitor our citizens like that in the U.S.”
According to the news conference yesterday, Edmonton police alleged that they are aware of Mr. Stanley’s whereabouts, but Williams alleged that he is unclear how they obtained that information. He mentioned in the press released that “I’ve read news reports that law enforcement knows exactly where he is and have located him.” He added that “I don’t know where that information came from.”
Regardless of their reservations, the federal justice minister’s office mentioned on Friday that local authorities on both sides of the border are “taking measures to ensure this individual is arrested as quickly as possible and brought to justice.” Their press secretary, Palomar Aguilar, explained that “once he is in custody, officials in the Department of Justice’s international assistance group will facilitate any possible extradition requests on an urgent basis.” Williams said U.S. investigators are cooperating with the Canadian authorities to figure out how the 48-year-old wanted on Canada-wide warrant entered the U.S. State Police has found out that some of Stanley’s extended family currently lives in Washington.
