Several Conservative senators, rocketed for months with harsh revelations of misspending in the upper chamber, have now expressed their wish that government shall make a positive mention about the institution within the Wednesday’s iconic throne speech. Senators are asking the speech to indicate that the government still respects the Senate, along with aim of tightening accountability in the upper chamber. However, many officials have anticipated that such an optimistic mention would do little to address growing unease and unrest in the Conservative Senate caucus.

Senior government officials have alleged that the upcoming throne speech, which will be read out loud in the Senate chamber on Wednesday afternoon, is going to mention the government’s aim of reforming Senate, though it will skip any reference to specific plans since the Supreme Court of Canada has yet to rule on how the red chamber can be reformed or abolished. Hence, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is anticipated to keep any mention of the upper chamber to be carefully worded.

Despite all the troubles faced by the Harper government due to the chamber, senior senators are suggesting that respectful words aren’t just needed for those in the chamber, but also for the party’s base. One of the senior senators currently embroiled in the ongoing expense scandal, who asked not to be named, alleged that “people were so sandbagged by the whole thing that it startled and astounded them.” He added that “there will have to be something (on the Senate) in the throne speech.”
