An early morning standoff in Vancouver finally concluded after police effectively arrested the suspect who had barricaded himself inside his Downtown Eastside hotel room on Monday. Authorities were alerted about a situation at the Roosevelt Hotel at 166 Hastings St. at around 4:30 a.m., when a 53-year-old man had allegedly threatened a fellow tenant inside the building. Consequently, assailant ended up cruelly punching her in the face, resulting in numerous unknown injuries in the attack.

Vancouver Police Department Const., Brian Montague, revealed that the suspect is known to police and has a “lengthy criminal history.” The suspect initially declined to come out and barricaded himself inside his room, when Montague updated that “he has mental health issues and has committed previous unprovoked and random attacks on his victims.” It was also found that the suspect had several previous convictions of violent assaults with and without weapons dating back to the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Consequently, police negotiators and mental health professionals were called at the scene to speak with the suspect, after which officers soon ended up arresting the suspect themselves a short while before 1 p.m. A press release explained that officers forcefully entered into the man’s fifth floor residence and took him in custody. It was added that the arrest did not result in any injuries to the suspect or any officers. It was elucidated that police officers had soon obtained a warrant to forcibly enter his residence to end the standoff shortly after the incident began.
