The news of Senate spending scandals has overcrowded national and international headlines for months now, but a Conservative senator has recently alleged that this is not all and more crucial exposures might come to light soon. When inquired about his take on the Senate reform during a recent visit to Prince George, Senator Scott Tannas stated that “I wouldn’t be surprised if we find some additional examples where people have not been as careful with taxpayer money as they should have been.”
The Senate is expected to be the most contentious topic on the next speech from the throne to be read by Gov. Gen. David Johnston to open fall session of the parliament on Wednesday afternoon. Several senators including Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin, Patrick Brazeau and former senator, Mac Harb, have all been highly scrutinized recently for devious violation of expense claims of various natures including housing, travel and contracts awarded by them. The Senate carried out several internal probes into the expenses, whereas the RCMP was also called in to further scrutinize and take a closer look at any criminal violations in some cases.
Tannas revealed that as the auditor general keeps on looking further at Senate expense practices, further violations might come to light in the coming weeks and months. Speaking of improper expense claims, he added that “that has to stop and that has to stop quickly,” and “that doesn’t take senate reform or the opening of the Constitution to do it, it just needs to be done.”
