A short while after the Lac-Megantic disaster, another CN Rail train carrying liquefied petroleum gas and crude oil recently derailed near exploded about 80 kilometres west of Edmonton, i.e. near a small community of Gainford, which was prompted to immediately evacuate. Representatives of the Parkland County Emergency Services confirmed having received a call alerting about the accident where a westbound train derailed and exploded near 1 a.m. MT on Saturday.

On the other hand, The Transportation Safety Board admitted that 13 cars, four of which were carrying petroleum crude oil while the remaining nine carried liquefied petroleum gas, left the tracks along Highway 16 and Range Road 61. Spokesperson for Parkland County, Carson Mills, initially informed that two of the cars containing liquefied petroleum gas had caught fire, whereas soon the number of cars on fire was corrected to four. Mills explained that “it’s still a volatile situation,” while revealing that the nearby areas have been placed under a state of emergency, while the entire community of roughly 100 is also evacuated. He added that there was one “significant explosion” at the time of the derailment, after which a “smaller one” followed, which added the risk of further explosions.

Authorities have confirmed that Highway 16 traffic was rerouted north along Secondary Highway 765, westbound along Secondary Highway 633 and returning southbound on Secondary Highway 757. Mills explained that evacuees have been instructed to keep away from the evacuated areas for at least 24 hours.
