A widely known and highly sympathized 62-year-old homeless man, Harley Lawrence, died in Berwick due to a suspicious fire that broke in a bus shelter on Commercial Street early on Wednesday morning. An emergency call alerted Kings RCMP and Berwick firefighters at around 2:10 a.m., informing about a fire immersing in the Kings Transit bus shelter in front of the Foodland store in the downtown district. Sources say that the call was placed by an overnight employee at the Foodland.
Consequently, The RCMP’s Southwest Nova major crime unit took over the incident, which acquired assistance of the RCMP identification unit and a police dog team. According to Provincial RCMP spokesman, Sgt. Al LeBlanc, police does not suspect anybody as yet and neither was anybody taken in custody from the scene on Wednesday. Even though several sources in town have coherently assured that the homeless man suffered a lot in the fire which lead to his death, however police are not yet confirming that stay as they claim that a positive identification could take some time.
Explaining that the RCMP considers all sudden deaths suspicious until determined otherwise, LeBlanc stated that “it’s very important to state that this is a suspicious death at this time until we know exactly what happened.” The RCMP has also requested an autopsy report scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, which is a vital tool to determine the cause of death. Rumor around town on Wednesday was that witnesses say two suspicious teens were seen buying gas at the nearby Irving station shortly before the fire.
