Police has confirmed that at least one child was seriously injured during a serious collision between a one-tonne work truck and a school bus north of Calgary. A spokesperson for STARS air ambulance verified that a five-year-old boy was flown from the crash site near Crossfield to the Children’s Hospital in Calgary.
While reports on the number of children travelling in the bus have varied, a spokesman for the county claims that nine kids were en route to their school when the accident occurred. Stacy McGuire of Rocky View County alleged that eight children and the bus driver were shifted to a nearby hospital via ground ambulance. According to RCMP Const., Robert Frizzell, the injuries range from severe to non-life-threatening. He stated that “initial reports indicate that the bus was transporting younger grade- school- to middle-school-aged children.”
Crossfield Mayor Nathan Anderson mentioned in a statement that the injured children attended Crossfield Elementary School, one of two schools in the community of 3,000. He alleged that “I am very concerned. Our prayers go out to those kids and families,” adding that “we just hope, God willing, they are all OK and will pull out of this without any lasting effects.” Apart from that, Frizzell revealed that authorities are yet unclear about what caused the crash. He explained that “we’re not quite sure what the contributing factor to this collision was, whether that’s limited visibility or road conditions or what’s actually there,” while assuring that “we’ve contacted our collision reconstructionists out of Calgary to attend and determine that.”
