Ontario’s Municipal Affairs Minister, Linda Jeffrey, has recently mentioned in a statement that allegations spread against Toronto Mayor Rob Ford are “troubling,” though the provincial minister highlighted that the province is not authorized to remove Mr. Ford from the office unless he is convicted criminally. In a latest development, Toronto Police Chief, Bill Blair, mentioned in a press conference on Thursday that the force has found a video allegedly showing Mr. Ford smoking crack cocaine along with his friend, Alessandro Lisi, who is charged with extortion in connection with the recording.

Minister Jeffrey mentioned in her statement that “the province has no power to remove anybody, and obviously we would have to wait as the investigation unfolds to next steps.” Jeffrey was addressing reporters at the Queen’s Park only a few minutes after Chief Blair’s announcement, when she added that “a conviction is the next step for any action by the province.”

Upon inquiry about her comments on the scandal swirling around the mayor, Ms. Jeffrey labeled it as “troubling” and “sad.” She stated that “these allegations certainly are troubling and obviously they’re under investigation right now. I don’t want to speculate any further. But I think the business of the city is ongoing, I have confidence in the council to do the business of the city, they’ve been doing a good job over the last few months of managing issues and I have confidence in the council.” Jeffrey ended saying that “I’m saddened to hear about those allegations and certainly we’ll see what unfolds in the coming months and weeks.”
