A fire on a baggage belt adjacent to an open cargo door in a Boeing 767, operated by Royal Air Maroc, belly triggered a full-scale emergency evacuation of 250 passengers and eight crew members, which caused injury to seven evacuees who were treated for smoke inhalation on Monday evening. Airport public-relations spokesperson at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, François Asselin, confirmed that the incident took place on the tarmac and the fire was reported at 4:47 p.m.

Operations chief at Urgences-Santé, Marc-André Gagnon, alleged that three people were suffering from lower-body injuries “consistent of the type sustained in a sliding fall,” after they used the plane’s emergency exit slides. Five injured women were all treated on the scene and shifted to a hospital, while the two men refused to be hospitalized.

Asselin explained that the aircraft, operating as Flight 206 on a direct flight from Casablanca, Morocco, had touched down about 4:30 p.m. He stated that “I can confirm there was smoke. I can’t confirm whether there was smoke inside the aircraft,” while adding that the evacuation was “more of a precautionary measure.” Asselin has been in the aviary business since 15 years, he alleged that “this is the first time I can recall such an incident at Montreal-Trudeau,” with emergency-slide deployment. Dollar estimate of the monetary damages were not immediately available. The plane was kept out of service, awaiting the arrival of investigators “first thing in the morning” from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
