Veteran Conservative MP Ted Menzies has made a final announcement stating that he has resigned from political life on Wednesday, further shortening a plan to end his career as previously announced by him earlier this year. Mr. Menzies is a well renowned politician who has vast experience of working on Parliament Hill on both sides of the House of Commons. He represented Macleod, in southern Alberta.

In a previously penned statement, Mr. Menzies alleged that “these past nine-and-a-half years have been an incredible experience for me as your Member of Parliament. However, the time has come for me to move on.” He stated that “many of you will know that I never intended to be a career politician, and as I said earlier this year, the severe flooding in Southern Alberta was a vivid reminder of why I chose to stand for election in 2004 – to serve the constituents of Macleod. Stepping down from my ministerial duties in July allowed me time this summer to play a small part in helping those affected, and just be there for my constituents.” Indicating towards his future plans, he stated that “I am retiring from politics but look forward to another exciting career ahead.”

Mr. Menzies has most noticeably served as Minister of State for Finance, i.e. a position he held while debating on pension reform with provinces and serving as a backup to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty during Question Period. Speaking of him in good words, NDP Leader Mulcair alleged that “he’s a reminder that there was once such a thing as a Progressive Conservative.”
