The mayors of Montreal and its neighbouring municipalities have convened unanimously to agree upon opposing Quebec’s proposed Charter of Values bill on Thursday, calling it divisive, appalling and embarrassing, and vowing to actively resent it.

Mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, elaborated that he has plans to travel to Quebec City to restate his point of view before the parliamentary committee and the leaders of the provincial political parties, including Premier Pauline Marois. He alleged that the bill does not only damage the city’s social fabric but also its economy, while also repeating his threat to challenge the bill in court, if it comes to that. Coderre stated that “there is no problem with having a neutral state and open secularism (where people can display religious symbols),” adding that “integration does not mean uniformity. We define this city by its diversity, and my role is to make sure we keep it.”

Referring to a survey conducted by Quebec’s largest employers’ group, i.e. the Conseil du patronat, Coderre quoted that it found 63 per cent of business owners opposed the charter and 82 per cent are of the opinion that it would cause harm to Quebec’s image internationally. He revealed his plans to ask Montreal’s newly elected city council to pass a motion opposing the charter, while also agglomeration council, as they have done in the past. Additionally, Côte-St-Luc Mayor, Anthony Housefather, called the bill both harrowing and embarrassing. He stated that “it’s an absolutely appalling piece of legislation and I think it’s something that would be laughed at in any other jurisdiction in North America.”
