Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird made an important announcement on Monday, disclosing that Canada has decided to depart members of its Disaster Assistance Response Team to the Philippines in order to provide emergency help in the typhoon-struck country. Baird explained that a C-17 airplane will depart Canada late Monday afternoon and transport almost 35 to 50 troops, an advance component of DART, along with all the equipment and essential items.

In his statement, Baird alleged that “we want to do all we can as quickly as we can to meet all the needs.” He admitted that Ottawa is moving “probably faster than we’ve ever moved” to deploy DART to a country in need. DART basically masters in providing basic medical care and infrastructure repairs, along with water purification. In addition to that, The Canadian Red Cross has also announced its plan to send its field hospital to the Philippines.

Earlier on Monday, Canadian officials revealed that its aid is also slowly making its way into the Philippines in light of one of the worst storms ever recorded. Authorities report that as many as 10,000 are feared dead in one Philippine city alone, asserting that total damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan is not known as yet. Director of emergencies and recovery at the Canadian Red Cross, Hossam Elsharkawi, stated that “the reports we are getting back are (describing it as), ‘This is unimaginable, this is unthinkable. This is basically one of the worst natural disasters we have seen in decades.’”
