Despite consistent disapprovals from the provincial Agricultural Land Commission to build a rodeo facility, due to it being unacceptable use of valuable farm land, a local developer went ahead with it after gaining support of B.C. Agriculture Minister Pat Pimm. The owner of the land and its developer, Terry McLeod, revealed that he built rodeo facilities, including a racetrack, a five-acre parking lot and seating for 3,000 people, ignoring an ALC ruling in August that deduced the land to be protected due to its high agricultural rating.

It turns out that ALC was not even aware of the development taking place at the site, until it was approached by several media sources on Tuesday. Mr. McLeod alleged that “well, I built the rodeo ground. I went ahead and did it all privately.” He attempted to get 70 hectares out of the Agricultural Land Reserve near Fort St. John to fulfill a dream of bringing big-time rodeos to northeast B.C. and with the support of his local MLA, Mr. Pimm, and the mayor of Fort St. John. Hence, he was sure to definitely acquire the approval this summer, but he did not.

Despite his case being rejected by ALC, he continued his plans amid hope to reapply and gain permission. Mr. McLeod claims that with support of city council “and now with Pat Pimm, Agriculture Minister, on board,” he is very confident he to eventually get ALC approval. He revealed that “the land that I developed into a rodeo ground … it’s taken up probably – I’m gonna say 60 acres or 80 acres, easy – of land that we won’t be farming anymore.”
