A motion aimed at making Toronto Mayor Rob Ford a “mayor in name only,” has stripped him off a number of executive powers in an almost unanimous city council vote on Friday. In retaliation, Ford promised to fight the motion in court. The special motion has withdrawn the mayor’s power to “appoint and dismiss the Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee Chairs.” The vote passed with an utter majority of 39-3, since only Mayor Ford, his brother Councillor Doug Ford and Councillor David Shiner voted against it.

Another motion is also deemed to take away the mayors’ powers to deal with emergencies. In response to the motion, Mayor Ford stated that “I can’t support this, but I completely understand where they are coming from.” He added that “this will cost taxpayers thousand of dollars.” This special meeting was prompted soon after Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne mentioned in a statement that provincial action will be taken if Toronto City Council asked for more powers to deal with the situation.

Ford inquired about several technical issues before the vote, including if he had a conflict of interest in voting on the motion, about which he alleged that his lawyer advised him to ask City Solicitor, Anna Kinastowski. However, she replied that it was not her place to offer personal legal advice on the issue. On the other hand, Councillor Doug Ford inquired about how much a legal challenge to the motion would cost the city, asserting that he is ready to fight the motion in court if passed. He stated that I’ll “look forward to challenging [it].”
