Besieged Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is expected to see more of his mayoral powers taken away by city council today, possibly leaving him with no real authority and only as a figurehead at city hall. Council has scheduled to take the extraordinary measure today and will debate on the motion which, if passed, would result in Mayor Ford’s office budget dropped as low as of any other city councilor and placed it at the discretion of the deputy mayor. Additionally, the motion is also anticipated to remove all powers statutorily conferred to him.

Last week, the council voted almost unanimously in favour of shedding several vital powers at the Mayor’s discretion, including his ability to hire and fire committee chairs and his leadership role in emergency situations. Meanwhile, public outcry for Mayor Ford to immediately resign from office have consistently increased since the time he first admitted having had smoked crack cocaine almost a year ago and to being inebriated at certain public events. However, Ford has been unwavering from his intentions to not resign and later run for re-election in the 2014 mayoral race.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, Mayor Ford reiterated the same stance he had last week, asserting that “I am not an alcoholic. I am not a drug addict,” and “have I had my outbursts in the past? Absolutely I have. But I’m only human; I’ve made mistakes, I’ve apologized, that’s all I can do.”
