In an extremely critical statement issued by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, he critiqued NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair for playing “crass” political games with their stance on Quebec sovereignty, which e alleged, “panders” to sovereigntists and misrepresents a Supreme Court ruling on the subject. Trudeau crushed Mulcair for his recent comments assuring the NDP’s position to accept a yes vote of more than 50 per cent in a referendum, which he alleged as necessary threshold to start negotiations on Quebec secession.
Challenging Mulcair’s assertions, Liberal leader alleged that his party position do not fulfill the obligations laid out in the Supreme Court decision. During an interview with Star on Sunday, Trudeau stated that “I just see it as a complete willingness to play games with national unity and mislead Canadians in the crassest of possible ways in hopes of currying favour with sovereigntists in Quebec.” He pointed out that the job of a potential prime minister “is to strengthen national unity, not make it easier for sovereigntists to break up the country.”
Trudeau was taking aim at comments made by Mulcair in Montreal last week during the party’s position on Quebec separation, where he vowed to “wipe the floor” with Trudeau on the issue in the 2015 vote. Addressing the crowd, Mulcair alleged that the Supreme Court of Canada in its 1998 decision on the issue declared that a “clear answer to a clear question” was needed. These remarks were recorded by an audience member and posted to YouTube, hence the context is unknown.
