Toronto Police bomb squad successfully carried out a controlled detonation of a suspected “incendiary device” in the middle of downtown Toronto, not more than eight blocks away from City Hall during rush hour commute on Tuesday morning. Sergeant Jeff Zammit was present at the scene at King Street West and Peter Street on Tuesday morning, where he revealed that officers had earlier pulled over a white Honda Civic around at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

It was explained that the car was pulled over for a traffic matter, but soon officers learnt about the suspicious package or packages inside the car. Consequently, the men were immediately arrested and taken to 14 Division. Sgt. Zammit stated earlier that “a robot’s already here, it’s already removed the item in the vehicle, and right now, we’re just waiting on them to detonate it.” Emergency Task Force officers called to investigate the package included at least one officer in a full-body bomb disposal suit, and explosive disposal robots.

Officers revealed that the suspicious package seemed to consist of a dark blue bag, which was left by officers only few feet behind the open trunk of the car. The officers started moving passersby and journalists even further back from the scene at around about 7:40 am, a few moments after which an officer began shouting out a countdown that lead to a loud explosion rang confirming that the device was detonated. According to Staff Sergeant Steve French, 14 division officers at expected to leave the scene and clear the area shortly.
