The U.S. president presented sixteen civilians with the highest award that can be given to an American
civilian, that is the Medal of freedom award. The ceremony took place this Wednesday at the White House and was planning to pay a tribute to the former U.S. president, John F. Kennedy, who put the foundations of this modern award but died on 22nd November, before the event could take place.

‘These are the men and women who in their extraordinary lives remind us all of the beauty of the human spirit, the values that define us as Americans, the potential that lives inside of all of us,’ said the U.S. president during the ceremony at the White House.

The recipients of the award included, Bill Clinton who was a former U.S. president and is also known for his extraordinary contribution to humanitarian services after his presidency. ‘Lifting up families like his own became the story of Bill Clinton’s life,’ said Obama. ‘He wanted to make sure he made life better and easier for so many people across the country.’ Another receiver of the medal was Oprah Winfrey, who is an actress, broadcaster, activist and was also an early supporter of President Obama’s first presidential campaign. The list further included Sally Ride, Ben Bradlee, Daniel Inouye, Richard Lugar, Gloria Steinem, Ernie Banks, Bayard Rustin, Daniel Kahneman, Loretta Lynn, Maria Molina, Arturo Sandoval, Dean Smith, Patricia Wald and C.T. Vivian.
