Justin Trudeau remembered Jack Layton as he quoted him during a victory speech after Liberal Party’s impressive performance in a series of by-elections, which ignited tensions with the NDP and foreshadowed more negative politics between now and the 2015 general election.

None of the four seats that were reelected on Monday changed hands, but the by-election results illustrated notable performance by the Liberal Party, weaknesses at hands of the Conservative and challenges for the NDP. In addition to that, Liberal Leader’s quoted Mr. Layton in his victory speech, while criticizing NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, after a series of bitter and often negative races in the urban ridings of Toronto Centre and Bourassa, each won by the Liberals.  During his victory speech, Mr. Trudeau stated that “this is no longer the hopeful, optimistic party of Jack Layton. It is the negative, divisive party of Tom Mulcair.” He added that “because it’s the Liberal party, tonight, that proved that hope is stronger than fear.”

The comments quoted from a letter released after Mr. Layton’s death in 2011 received a bitter response from Mr. Mulcair, who alleged “that Justin Trudeau would use Jack Layton’s dying words as a political tool says everything that needs to be said about Justin Trudeau’s judgment and character.” Mr. Mulcair gave these remarks on Tuesday. On the other hand, apart from NDP and Liberals, the Conservatives also held their two rural seats in Manitoba, Provencher and Brandon-Souris, though each by a smaller margin than in the past.
