Several Torontonians had to welcome 2014 in the dark since Toronto Hydro crews were unable to complete the power restoration process in time, leaving behind at least 100 customers without electricity on the New Year’s Eve. The city was plunged into darkness by an ice storm that ravaged the city on Dec. 21. Amid the ongoing efforts to recover power to all areas of the city and the larger area of the province, the Ontario government has recently announced to distribute $100 in vouchers to families who lost food due to power outage forcing the freezers and fridges to shut down.

However, the distribution of vouchers proved to be a problem as more people were waiting in line at 15 Ontario Works offices in Toronto than the province had cards available. Consequently, those who had waited in queue for hours on Tuesday at Golden Mile Employment & Social Services, on Eglinton Avenue East near Victoria Park Avenue, had to come back for the ticket on Thursday.  On the other hand, those who were already on Ontario Works or Ontario Disability were advised to contact their case worker for a credit to their existing account.

Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Madeleine Meilleur, confirmed that $160,000 has been distrusted in gift cards, and added that “I would also like to remind everyone that these gift cards are intended to help those who have lost food and are unable to replace it without financial assistance. This initiative cannot provide gift cards to everyone who lost power, and should be reserved for those facing the most need.”
