Waterloo Region has been placed under a wind chill warning by Environment Canada. According to the agency, there is a high risk of wind chill to hit the southern and eastern Ontario and last until Friday morning with bitterly cold Arctic air.

A meteorologist at Environment Canada, Geoff Coulson, mentioned in a statement that residents should definitely stay indoors as much as possible. It was explained that “with the wind chills for today and Friday — unless folks have to be outside — it really would be preferable to be staying indoors. For folks that have to go out, you definitely want to make sure that you’re dressing properly. Layers are always a good idea to add that extra bit of insulation, a good pair of mitts, a good pair of boots and (put) a toque on your head,” due to temperatures  going as low as -17 C, it feeling like -30 C to -40 C across the region.

Moreover, the areas south of Kitchener, including the Niagara Peninsula, are most likely to encounter the worst impact of the cold. Coulson warned that it only takes nearly 10 to 30 minutes for frostbite to occur, as he explained that “tingling in the fingers and the discolouration may indicate that frostbite could be occurring.” In addition to that, he revealed that “we are expecting more seasonal temperatures this weekend with highs of about -3 C, which is where we should be this time of year. That situation lingers into Monday with seasonal temperatures … however it does look like the colder air will reassert itself Tuesday and Wednesday.”
