A sudden increase in the number of flu cases detected in Alberta has alerted the health officials in the Northwest Territories, which have now officially demanded extra precautions. Officials in Alberta have confirmed having had come across more than 900 confirmed cases of flu so far, five of which had to loose with their lives due to the H1N1 strain.
On the other hand, 19 flu cases have been confirmed in the N.W.T. so far this season. Speaking about which, N.W.T.’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Andre Corriveau, mentioned that “we have at least five people in hospital right now with a more severe form of influenza and it’s something that is never completely benign.” According to the officials, the flu season have started way early than expected, hence they’re recommending people travelling to provinces with high flu rates, along with children heading back to school, to be more aware. Moreover, Corriveau advised that if people start to express flu symptoms they should stay home on the days they’re most ill. The public is advised visit a flu shot clinic at the Public Health office in Yellowknife Jan. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Nunavut’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Maureen Baikie, alleged that “we know that there’s a lot of influenza activity in the south,” and “most of it is H1N1 and so we expect that to arrive in Nunavut anytime now. Our season is usually a little bit lighter.” Public health officials have advised patients to wash their hands and cover their mouths when they cough.
