Even though Olivia Chow did not deny being interested in becoming Toronto’s next mayor, she directly refuted any plans alleging that she might become the next Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. The New Democrat MP for the Toronto riding of Trinity-Spadina, Ms. Chow, is often deemed as one of the top contenders in the race to replace Rob Ford as the Mayor of Canada’s largest city, Toronto, regardless of the fact that she never officially disclosed her interest in the job.

In a statement issued by Ms. Chow through Twitter on Monday, she straightforwardly denied the rumors alleging that she is in line to be the next vice-regal in her home province. She wrote that “it seems the rumor mill is in full force this morning. Let me be crystal clear, the reports of an LG offer are completely false.” The rumours alleging that Ms. Chow might soon be sworn in as the next Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario were initially coined in the blog of The Agenda’s host, Steve Paikina.

Mr. Paikin alleged that the tenure of Ontario’s current Lieutenant-Governor, David C. Onley, will come to an end later this month. He wrote that “Lieutenant-Governors are appointed by the prime minister. I’m told Chow has been offered the job by Prime Minister Harper,” while alleging that “in truth, it’s a very clever offer,” because “Chow is a terrific ‘people person,’ and would do an excellent job as LG. She would also make history as the first lieutenant-governor of Asian descent …”
