Former city councilor David Soknacki officially opened his mayoralty bid on Monday, promising to raise the level of openness and transparency in Toronto election campaigns while also daringly challenging his competitors to do the same. In his announcement, Soknacki revealed that his campaign will begin unveiling a quarterly list of donors at the end of March, after which it will publish a donor list in “real time” by Labour Day. Speaking about which, he added that “voters are entitled to know who gives what to whom in a mayoralty campaign.”

In addition to that, after Soknacki registered at city hall on Monday, he further assured that he will post details about any meetings he has with lobbyists on his website. He stated that “I want to hear every point of view on the issues we face and the decisions I will have to make as mayor — when I do so, the public has a right to know and I have a responsibility to tell them.” Additionally, he alleged that these “fundamental changes” will make Toronto election campaigns better. Soknacki mentioned enthusiastically that “I want this job with all my heart. I know we can do better as a city. Let’s make it happen.”

Apparent competitors of Soknacki include current Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, TTC Chair and Councillor Karen Stintz, and Trinity-Spadina NDP MP Olivia Chow. Radio host and former Progressive Conservative leader, John Tory, and Councillor, Denzil Minnan-Wong, are among others considering entering the competition for the election scheduled to be held on October 27.
