Utility crews in Newfoundland and Labrador have succeeded in restoring power to almost 25,000 homes and business on Monday, which has now lessened the number of customers left in the dark to about 5,000. The utility’s subscribers on the island had to go through the fourth day without power and suffered from blackouts due to a number of events that collectively culminated the unfortunate condition, including frigid temperatures, a fire at a terminal station and a power plant that went offline.

Despite the number of events that have caused problems for the province in fully restoring the power grid, Premier Kathy Dunderdale adamantly stated that the situation is not “full blown crisis,” as alleged by the opposition. Dunderdale mentioned that “our roads are open, our hospitals are fully functional, government services are fully functional,” while adding that “there’s electricity in major parts of the province where we have electricity, and business is up and running. And while it is a critical situation, it’s not a full blown crisis.” In addition to that, Dunderdale stated that “we hope all things move smoothly through the day and we should have all people back online by the end of the day,” while at the same time, it was warned that the province will still the rolling blackouts for a few days.

All schools and universities in the island, including Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic, are schooled to remain closed until Wednesday, as Dunderdale stated that “we’re still trying to conserve power.” It was mentioned that “some of these buildings have been cold for over 24 hours. We want an opportunity for them to warm up.”
