In his new book, Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary of War, the former U.S. Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates revealed that the American President, Barack Obama, lacked faith in his own war strategy in Afghanistan. He also lacked faith in the commander, he named to lead the strategy and also did not like the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai.
Gates described Obama as a ‘man of integrity’ who was uncomfortable with the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, that he had inherited from the previous administration. Gates further wrote that in 2010, he was able to conclude that the President ‘doesn’t believe in his own strategy, and doesn’t consider the war to be his. For him, it’s all about getting out.’ Obama after continuous meetings with Gates, deployed thirty thousand more troops to stabilize conditions in Afghanistan before the withdrawal of forces began in 2011. Gates added, ‘I never doubted Obama’s support for the troops, only his support for their mission.’
The former CIA director voices his frustration at the controlling nature of Obamas White House, which he says continuously meddled in the decisions and the affairs of the Pentagon, even though civilian aides lacked understanding of military operations. It is rare for a former cabinet member to portray such an antagonistic account of the current sitting President and his administration. The book not only reflects disappointment in Obama, but also outright contempt towards Vice President Biden. He accuses Biden of being ‘wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.’
