In an announcement made by Simon Fraser University on Thursday, it has revealed that Burnaby will soon be housed with a new $4.4-million observatory capable of tracking distant galaxies. According to the university, the Trottier Observatory is aimed to be completed by August, at the location of main SFU campus, which will be dedicated to engaging children and youth in science.

The newly opened Trottier Studio for Innovative Science Education has been funded by the Trottier Foundation, led by Montreal philanthropists Lorne and Louise Trottier. Howard Trottier, Lorne’s brother, is also a professor of physics and astronomy at SFU, who has often expressed passion for astro-photography. In a statement issued on early Thursday, Howard alleged that he felt like a kid again, recalling the first time he gazed up at the stars with his first telescope when he was in Grade 6. He remembered gathering students and other amateur astronomers to gaze at Burnaby Mountains.

Founder of SFU’s Starry Nights program, Trottier, alleged that “for me, it’s a thrilling experience.” He promised that the observatory will be a free host for daytime telescope and astronomy workshops for grade-school kids. Speaking about the location at the east end of campus near Strand Hall, Trottier alleged that “the observatory will be an anchor for a science plaza in a location where thousands of people will walk by it.” The studio is housed in the chemistry wing of the Shrum Science Building.
