Parti Québécois Minister, Bernard Drainville, has recently alleged that the controversy encircling religious accommodation has spilled over from Quebec into the rest of the country, as he predicted that a fractious debate is inevitable. According to Mr. Drainville, the rest of Canada will unavoidably have to draw a line for religious accommodation and eventually come up with solutions similar to those Quebec wants to apply.

Mr. Drainville alleged that the country’s multiculturalism policies are failing and “the debate over multiculturalism is going to catch up with them. They won’t be able to avoid it. There will be more cases like the one we saw in Toronto.” The minster was referring to a recent scandal that erupted this week from a York University student who requested to be exempted from interacting with female classmates on religious grounds. The minister appreciated the Professor, Paul Grayson, who straightforwardly refused to grant such permission since he felt such a precedent could be used to justify sexism. Whereas, on the other hand, the school’s dean of arts contrariwise ordered the professor to accommodate the student.

During a telephone interview on Friday, Mr. Drainville concluded that “the debate in Quebec is opening the eyes of many people in the rest of Canada.” He mentioned that “they are becoming aware that they have the same problem as us. A lot of people have been afraid to speak out against unreasonable accommodations made to religious groups by public institutions … and who are now saying, ‘Enough is enough.’”
