Toronto city council is set to resume for a special meeting on the agenda of discussing compensation for last month’s ice storm on Monday. Previously, Mayor Rob Ford introduced a formal motion recommending city council to ask the federal and provincial governments to contribute $60 million for ice storm cleanup and compensation. It plead that councillors must declare Toronto a “disaster area” by Tuesday so that it can qualify for provincial funding under the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP). The next meeting is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. on Monday.

During the previous meeting held on Friday, city manager Joe Pennachetti alleged that Toronto should also request compensation for the July 8, 2013, when the rain storm approximately cost the city almost $65 million. Pennachetti added that the cost of both storms will total up to $171 million. At the same time, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly seconded Pennachetti’s suggestion that province, the federal government and the city should each bear one third of the cost of recovering from the storms.

Toronto is eligible to acquire funds from the province under ODRAP, which is constituted to cover damage to public infrastructure and buildings, along with extra city spending needed to deal with the storm, along with helping private citizens pay for food, shelter, and essential clothing. Despite that, Pennachetti alleged that in case the ODRAP isn’t available to Toronto, he still recommends that council shouldd persistently ask the provincial and federal governments to establish new programs to help rehabilitate city infrastructure.
