The RCMP has now announced to have allowed traffic to pass through a section of Highway 16, which was previously closed due to a landslide on Monday morning. According to the officials, the avalanche was reported to them at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday and originated at Shale Hill near Mount Robson. It was revealed that the slide was reportedly almost 40 metres wide and nearly two feet deep, and it triggered a complete closure of the highway between Jasper and Tete Jaune.

During a phone interview, BC RCMP’s Cst. Lesley Smith shared that “small avalanches are not uncommon on our highways, but I do believe that this is our first one this year that needed to be reported on.” Smith added that “motorists were going to be stuck for quite some time, if they were in that location.” RCMP revealed that the incident is being well handled by Lakes District maintenance crews. Moreover, Police have confirmed that no vehicles were trapped in the avalanche, and no injuries were reported as well. However, it was mentioned that one driver of a pickup truck attempted to drive through the slide but soon got stuck in the debris and snow before any could have happened.

According to a briefing from the Ministry of Transportation, the risk of more slides remains high. It was added that an avalanche technician is conducting controlled slides in an effort to eliminate risk for work crews. In addition to that, Highway 1 is also closed at the moment due to avalanche risk, but officials hope it will be re-opened late Monday evening.
