The plans of Parti Québécois to impose secular charter of Quebec values were scrutinized harshly on the first day by a Muslim woman, Samira Laouni, who wore a hijab while testifying on the first day of public hearings. Laouni alleged that the proposed legislation has already produced grave social tensions which were previously not know to the Quebecers.
Ms. Laouni shared that she knows of several Muslim women who have been spat on and have had their head scarf torn off. She stated that “I’ve been here for 15 years. I have never seen it like this until now.” Laouni is among the first few witnesses who appeared before the National Assembly out of the total 250 parties that are scheduled to testify for almost 200 hours spread over the next several weeks.
On the other hand, the PQ minister responsible for democratic institutions, Bernard Drainville, opened the hearings with a very strong speech defending the highly controversial bill tabled by him last November. Pointing out that only 20 per cent of Muslim women in Quebec wear the veil, he mentioned “that is one in five that won’t be affected by the restrictive measures.” However, in response to these claims, Ms. Laouni mocked the minister and reminded him that it was his responsibility to protect minorities. She mentioned that “in a democratic country you need to think about the 1 per cent that is affected. You don’t think about the absolute majority, you think about the minority that is being crushed.”
