Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford recently accused Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne of having had possibly refused to meet with him because he helped former councilor, Doug Holyday, win a summer provincial byelection as a Progressive Conservative. However, Wynne straightforwardly refuted the accusation and alleged that she is a busy person, and hence chose to meet with Deputy Mayor, Norm Kelly, because he is the man city council gave most of the mayor’s traditional powers in the wake of Ford’s November admission of crack cocaine use.
Ms. Wynne promptly refused a request from Mayor Ford to meet for a one-on-one meeting on Tuesday over the issue of ice storm. Quite noticeably, she has exclusively collaborated with Kelly since council’s almost unanimous vote in November. Appearing late on Tuesday’s Newstalk 1010, Ford was questioned by Toronto Sun columnist, Joe Warmington, if he thinks Wynne’s refusal to meet with him “can’t just be because of what happened last year — there’s got to be some political and personal things that we don’t know.” Answering her question, Mr. Forde alleged that “maybe, I think, you know, the Wynne government’s pretty upset with me getting involved in the byelection, getting Doug Holyday in there. Because I did work very hard for Doug to win Etobicoke-Lakeshore.” He urged Wynne to “move on from that.”
However, appearing at the LCBO on Queens Quay on Wednesday morning, Wynne chuckled when inquired about Ford’s suggestion of Holyday-related ill will. She explained to have met Kelly because “Toronto city council made a decision about the authority for leadership at city hall.”
