After years of counseling its counterparts in Washington, Ottawa has finally given up to its frustrations and announced that it will not allow any more delays in the decision of Keystone XL pipeline. In a statement made by Foreign Minister, John Baird, on Thursday, he demanded for an immediate decision, “even if it’s not the right one.” Standing only few steps from the White House at a luncheon hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Baird indicated that his government’s patience has run out and the priority now is to end the “state of limbo,” even if it results in a refusal of the project.

Mr. Baird mentioned adamantly that “If there’s one message I’m going to be promoting on this trip, it’s time for Keystone right now.” He explained that “I’ll go further — the time for a decision on Keystone is now, even if it’s not the right one. We can’t continue in this state of limbo. U.S. energy interdependence is too important; the environment is too important; our economies are too important.”

Addressing America’s largest business coalition, Baird acknowledged that he was “preaching to the converted” when he alleged that Canadian oil, gas and electricity are the key ingredients in “the largest and most integrated energy relationship in the world.” These rough remarks came from Mr. Baird in his speech on the 20th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement. He ends his latest blitz of Washington Friday with a trilateral meeting with his U.S. and Mexican counterparts.
