A former Toronto city councillor and the widow of former NDP leader Jack Layton, Olivia Chow, has officially acknowledged for the first time that she is considering the idea of asking voters in Toronto to elect her as mayor. In a press conference held on Thursday, Ms. Chow spoke along with other New Democrat MPs on her side that “I love the city of Toronto, it’s my home.” She formally requested the federal Conservative government to aid in Canada’s largest city clean up after last month’s disastrous ice storm.

Revealing her position for the top job in the city, Ms. Chow confessed that “I am seriously considering running for mayor,” though she quickly added that “I have not made a decision and once I make that decision I will let you know.” This is perhaps the strongest acknowledgment yet made by Ms. Chow, since only rumors of her candidacy were circulating up till now. She is often considered a front-runner for the esteemed position even though she has not officially entered the race.

According to numerous rumors, Ms. Chow and a Toronto radio show host who was a former leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party, John Tory, have already composed a large organizations of campaigners in place. Acknowledging such rumors, Ms. Chow mentioned that “Yes, I have some friends that are very eager.” She added that “they are out meeting and talking to each other. I am here working for my colleagues, the wonderful team of Members of Parliament, representing, fighting for Toronto and I am just awfully glad I am part of the team.”
