In his first visit to Israel and Middle East, Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper will have trade, energy and security on top of his agenda. Mr. Harper’s four days tour in Israel next week will be a culmination of the nation’s affections for Canada’s staunch support since the Conservatives took office in 2006.

According to his official schedule, Mr. Harper will be visiting a bird sanctuary in northern Israel to be named in his honour, collect a honourary degree from Tel Aviv University, and speak to the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, along with an important meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netayahu. This visit is the first one for Harper, who will be touring a region where security is not an abstract concept but an everyday worry. On the other hand, Mr. Harper’s Israeli counterparts are hoping that he will take away a better understanding of the region’s security stance.

Israel’s ambassador to Canada, Rafael Barak, mentioned in a statement that “I think this visit has two major objectives. First of all, an expression of our friendship. I think it will be a good opportunity for both leaders to discuss the most urgent matters.” He explained that “the second one will be to help Mr. Harper discover our country. So we would like to not only spend his days talking and talking behind closed doors but have the opportunity to show what is Israel about.” Mr. Harper is anticipated to receive a very warm welcome in recognition of the prime minister’s support of Israel in both words and deeds.
