It has been confirmed that Canada’s heritage minister recently returned hundreds in donations after she was accused of having had received donations from those depending on taxpayer money from her department. It was disclosed that Minister Shelly Glover was present in a fundraiser organized by members of her riding association at a home in her Winnipeg electoral district of Saint-Boniface on Thursday night.

In an email addressed on Saturday by Glover’s spokesman, Mike Storeshaw, the attendees of the fundraiser were “largely members of the Winnipeg arts community, some of whom have or have had dealings with the Department of Canadian Heritage.” According to Storeshaw, the guests offered Glover’s riding association $50 dollars each, which accumulated a total of $1,200, along with one guest who offered $500. The minister was later warned that the federal conflict of interest rules restrict her from receiving donations from people lobbying his or her department for federal contracts.

Storeshaw mentioned in the email that Glover has since communicated her riding association to stop accepting any of the funds from the event. It was mentioned that “all individuals attending have had cheques returned to them, or their credit cards will not be charged.” It was added that “her (Electoral District Association) has also been instructed to avoid such situations in the future.” Even though Glover claims to have notified the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner regarding the Winnipeg fundraiser, House opposition ethics critic, Charlie Angus, mentioned in an interview on Saturday that “getting caught and paying the money back is no ethical standard.”
