Another alleged case of suicide of a member of the Canadian Armed Forces has increased the number of such instances to an alarming number of eight in the last two months. A veteran who had experience of working in Haiti in 1997 and Bosnia in 1999, Lieut.-Col. Stephane Beauchemin passed away last Thursday in Limonges, Ont., i.e. a small community about 45 km east of Ottawa. The news of her death was confirmed by multiple sources on Sunday night, including military officials, however it was not confirmed if the helicopter pilot committed suicide.

However, on the other hand, Canadian Veterans Advocacy president, Mike Blais, recently revealed that his sources have confirmed Beauchemin died by suicide. In light of such remorseful incidents of veterans’ suicide, the federal government announced that “great efforts” are being made to provide support for members of the Canadian military “going through difficult times.” In an official statement issued by the minister of national defence, Rob Nicholson, earlier this month in a statement. He alleged that “Canadians can trust that the Armed Forces take the issue of member suicide very seriously.”

However, several veterans and advocacy groups claim that inadequate efforts are being made to address mental illness in the military. 28-year veteran, Steve Critchley, recently mentioned that “between the Department of National Defence, Veterans Affairs Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces, they all go in their own separate directions, they are not working together, and the basic game plan appears to be how fast can they dump people off on provincial health care systems.”
