In a joint press conference hosted by the Canadian and Israeli Prime Ministers on Tuesday, it was announced that both countries are searching for ways to boost each other’s economy with new trade deals. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, revealed that they have instructed respective officials to launch negotiations in order to expand and modernize the existing Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement.

Among other anticipated deals between the two countries, Canada is hoping to avail new opportunities in the Israeli market for its agricultural and fisheries products. In addition to that, the two countries also signed the Canada-Israel Strategic Partnership Memorandum of Understanding, which basically focuses on energy, security, international aid and development, and the promotion of human rights globally. Both these important announcements were made after Netanyahu and Harper chaired a joint cabinet meeting. Mr. Harper is visiting Israel with almost all of his top cabinet ministers including Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, Employment Minister Jason Kenney, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, International Trade Minister Ed Fast, Industry Minister James Moore and International Co-Operation Minister Christian Paradis.

Mr. Harper also held a private meeting with Israeli President, Shimon Peres, during which he discussed several key issues including recent developments in Syria and Iran, providing historical background and context for Harper. Mr. Harper mentioned that “every time we speak I find it very thought provoking,” and added that “Canada is the polar opposite of Israel because we have much geography but very little history.”
