Making an astonishing announcement on Wednesday, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale disclosed that she has decided to resign from her position. She announced the decision before thanking provincial workers, her colleagues and the people of her province. Consequent, Dunderdale was thanks with a lengthy applause while she smiled and thanked people in the room before announcing she would be stepping down as of Friday.

Standing by the side of her cabinet, Dunderdale alleged that she was grateful to have served her constituents and the province, while acknowledging a number of achievements before saying she knew there was a time to step up, and a time to step down, and the time had come for her to resign. She announced that Finance Minister, Tom Marshall, be leading the party until a new leader can be chosen. She stated that “I know I am leaving our government in the most capable of hands.”

The member of Dunderdale’s Progressive Conservative government who recently crossed the floor to the Liberals accused the premier of having “lost touch” with the people. Paul Lane accused Dunderdale of being missing in action during several crises in the province, including the recent rolling blackouts. Lane mentioned that “it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” However, in an emailed statement, Dunderdale responded saying that “Mr. Lane didn’t express any discontent with leadership or the direction of the party before his announcement today, including when he accepted a promotion on Oct. 9.”
