A horrific nighttime fire struck at a seniors’ residence in a small village in eastern Quebec and has resulted in more than thirty people being unaccounted for. Officials claim that the fire started after midnight at Résidence du Havre, i.e. a 52-unit home for senior citizens in L’Isle-Verte, in the Lower St. Lawrence region, i.e. 230 kilometres down river from Quebec City. The fire was so massive that firefighters from five neighbouring villages were made to battle the flames, which stormed for several hours.
During an interview of a local resident who lives across the street, Mario Michaud, he mentioned that “it’s still smoking” and “this is awful.” He claims to have witnessed a young man making a hopeless attempt to bring a ladder to rescue his mother from a second-floor apartment inside the complex. Sûreté du Québec confirmed in its post on Twitter that 16 survivors have been reportedly taken to a local school gymnasium, though he confirmed three deaths and that 30 residents remain missing. It was a cold, windy night, with the temperature around -20C.
Mr. Michaud said says he was awake around 12:30 a.m. ET when he noticed smoke coming out of the residence. He stated that “I called 9-1-1. The fire was spreading fast as gunpowder.” He shared to have witnessed firefighters struggling to rescue people victims already in disabled and in wheelchairs. He claims to repeatedly remember the moment when a woman was shouting from a second-floor balcony while her son tried to rescue her without success.
