One of the top contenders for Toronto’s Mayoral position, David Soknacki, recently stressed that he wants to accelerate construction of current transit projects in Toronto and vowed not to meddle and “redraw lines on the map.” The former councillor has already announced his plans, if elected, to nullify new plans for a subway extension in Scarborough and revert to the former agreement for light rail.

Sockacki mentioned on Thursday that he supports the LRT lines proposed for Sheppard and Finch avenues. Soon after delivering a speech at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, Mr. Soknacki informed reporters on Thursday that “the lines that are there, the lines that have been supported by environmental assessments, by professional review, I believe ought to go forward.” He added that “the funding is there; let’s just get them built faster.” Additionally, he vowed to use a part of the mayor’s budget to hire a policy adviser, if elected, who would have widely acknowledged experience in construction, public-private partnerships and look at incentives that would motivate quicker transit development.

On the other hand, Socknacki’s prominent opponent and current Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford has been an open critique of surface transit and has repeatedly mentioned that he would like to replace the LRTs planned for Finch and Sheppard with subways. He has openly lobbied and announced his support for a subway in Scarborough, where rapid transit expansion has been a hotly debated political issue and, in its most recent iteration, the plan is for a subway there.
