A spokesperson for 15 Wing, Capt. Thomas Edelson, have confirmed that two crew members successfully survived a plane crash south of 15 Wing Moose Jaw on Friday afternoon. He explained that “two people made a controlled ejection from a CT-156 Harvard aircraft, and that was initiated when the pilot determined it would not be safe to attempt a controlled landing.” It was added that “rescue crews and vehicles were on the scene shortly after the incident and both personnel walked away from the area where they touched down under parachute.”

The incident took place at around 1:50 p.m., soon after which Edelson claims a medical unit collaborated with the two crew members and took them to hospital for a routine medical evaluation. He mentioned that “it’s part of the procedure that happens after any ejection,” and that “the plane flew itself into an empty field about 10 miles to the south of the base.” According to Edelson, it is yet to determine why the ejections were absolutely necessary because “that basically belongs to the director of flight safety now, to determine what the conditions were that the pilot felt made it unsafe and whatever evidence they can gather from the plane or what’s left of the plane” since “the factors that contributed to the pilot’s decision, that would be speculation on my part.”

Edelson speculated the investigators will be on scene for “quite some time.” As he explained that “you have to take pictures and look at the evidence first and make all these notes before you actually start the cleanup.” He concluded that at “the end of it is it’s certainly a very unusual day at 15 Wing and certainly an unusual day for the two people in that aircraft, but everything worked. The safety systems worked. They got out of the plane. Their parachutes worked.”
