An alleged terrorist accused of having links with an international terrorist group, Al-Qaeeda, and suspected of plotting to derail a New York-to-Toronto train appeared for a court hearing on Wednesday but kept ranting against gay marriage in his struggle against the Criminal Code. Chiheb Esseghaier is representing himself in court to defend terrorism charges and has previously demanded to be judged by the Qu’ran instead of the Criminal Code. He cleverly made use of permission to speak for five-minute to publicize his views on gay marriage.

30-yaer-old Esseghaier, a Tunisian PhD student in Montreal, alleged that “homosexual marriages are protected by the Criminal Code because the Code doesn’t consider this a crime. Even the animals don’t do this.” However, he was soon cut off by Justice John McMahon, who said “excuse me, we are going to do this my way,” But surprisingly, Esseghaier interrupted the judge and kept on saying that “excuse me, even animals don’t do that, except maybe donkeys.”

McMahon stressed that the accused’s views on the Criminal Code “aren’t relevant today,” but Esseghaier recalled that he was allowed five minutes to speak and reminded the judge that he was breaking his promise for the allotted time. Acquiring permission to continue, Esseghaier complained that he was strip-searched, and said that the guard “forced me to show him my sex (genitals).” Esseghaier appeared in court, along with his co-accused Raed Jaser, to face charges linked to a complicated investigation in what the RCMP has alleged was an al- Qaida-inspired plan to derail a passenger train.
