Sources reveal that the former Canadian brigadier-general who resigned after his sexual relationship with a subordinate surfaced publicly, Daniel Menard, is being held in an Afghan jail for three weeks. Menard is currently serves as the managing director for Afghanistan for a private security firm called GardaWorld. The source added that he has done “nothing wrong,” and alleged that it is not uncommon for foreign contractors to be jailed in Afghanistan due to government corruption.

According to his employee profile on the company’s website, Menard is working with GardaWorld since Nov. 2011, and is tasked to oversee GardaWorld’s “commercial, operations and projects throughout the country, including existing and new contracts with the U.S. government, non-governmental and commercial clients.” According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs, it was mentioned that the department officials “have been in contact with the subject, and are providing him with consular assistance.”

Menard was the commander of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan before he was stripped of his command and ordered to return home in June 2010 in light of an affair with his subordinate. Military rules strictly prohibit any sort of sexual relationship between soldiers while they are deployed, even if they are married. According to the allegations Menard, who was married with two children, was having an affair with Master Cpl. Bianka Langlois since they first met in Canada in 2008, and the relationship continued while they were deployed in Afghanistan between Nov. 2009 and Apr. 2010.
