The group of senators recently booted from Liberal caucus by the party head, Justin Trudeau, this week are suspected of making moves to unite against the Trudeau on Thursday, as they claim he couldn’t stop any of them from calling themselves Liberals. Sen. George Furey stated that “Justin Trudeau has no authority or authorization to determine my status in the chamber. I determine that,” and Sen. Terry Mercer, a former party president, also said that “Mr. Trudeau removed me from the Liberal caucus. He didn’t remove me from the Liberal party.”

Majority of the senators recently booted from the caucus attended a closed-door meeting on Parliament Hill on Thursday, in which they reiterated their decision to have chosen to sit in the upper chamber as members of Liberal caucus. This implies that these senators will be using the party’s name against the wishes of Trudeau’s inner circle despite Trudeau’s abrupt announcement on Wednesday that they were no longer Liberal senators. However, the Senate’s official website still lists all 32 senators as Liberals.

Upon inquiry from Sen. James Cowan, the leader of the Senate Liberal caucus, about Trudeau’s pronouncement, he replied that “You’ll have to ask him (Trudeau) about that,” and alleged that “I am a Liberal senator and I remain a Liberal senator.” Caucus sources are anticipated to seek retribution from Trudeau’s team, however the bigger question is if there was anything they could do. It was suggested that Trudeau didn’t do enough homework on the rules of the Senate, which Senate Speaker Noel Kinsella ruled allow the senators to identify as Liberals.
