Suspended Sen. Patrick Brazeau and Retired Sen. Mac Harb have been officially charged by the RCMP and are soon to face one count each of breach of trust and fraud over their spending of taxpayers’ dollars. The announcement was made in a news conference held by the RCMP on Tuesday morning to provide an update on its investigation into the Senate spending scandal. It was explained that both are charged under sections 122 and 380 of the Criminal Code and will appear in court at a later date.

According to the court documents previously filed by the RCMP last year, it was mentioned that Sen. Brazeau and Sen. Harb were being investigated for fraud and breach of trust for claiming travel and living expenses they did not deserve. In addition to that, the RCMP also confessed to have begun investigation into suspended senators Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin over their spending.

Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, appointed former national chief with the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, Brazeau, to the Senate in January 2009. He was the youngest ever senator to have sat in the Red Chamber, and was later arrested, charged with assault and sexual assault, and subsequently kicked out of the Conservative caucus last February. According to court documents released in August, the RCMP alleged that Brazeau claimed a $22,000 per year housing allowance from the Senate after declaring a home that he didn’t own as his primary residence. Consequently, he was suspended without pay alongside fellow Harper appointees Pamela Wallin and Mike Duffy in November.
