In an official apology endorsed by Alberta Premier Alison Redford on Monday, she publicly said sorry for embarking on a $45,000 trip to Nelson Mandela’s funeral but also refused to repay the hefty expense at the same time. Redford has been criticized for the cost she incurred for December trip to South Africa, including an almost $15,000 flight to Ottawa on an Alberta government plane to get on Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s jet. Additionally, the government was also billed for another $10,000 on a flight home from South Africa on a commercial air, while Redford could have returned with Harper, and $20,000 in travel costs for an aide to accompany her.

Following the announcement of new schools for Calgary, Redford mentioned that “It has certainly come to my attention that there were some decisions made that week without the full and complete information that we could have had, which didn’t even follow our normal procedure in terms of trip planning. Mistakes were made. I accept responsibility for that and I apologize.”

Redford was invited by Mr. Harper to attend Mandela’s funeral since has had the experience of working with the South African leader in the early 1990s. Redford elaborately stated that “this was a trip that was part of the Canadian delegation, it was business of the government of Alberta and I attended on that basis. I certainly take responsibility for the processes in place and I apologize for that and we’re going to move forward.”
