In light of an approaching provincial election, Premier Kathleen Wynne has lost yet another member of her cabinet. Several sources allege that Municipal Affairs Minister, Linda Jeffrey, has decided to step down from her position and instead run for mayor of Brampton. She is anticipated to race against incumbent Susan Fennell and regional councillor John Sanderson.

According to a statement issued by Jeffrey’ spokesperson on Sunday evening, it was mentioned that “Linda Jeffrey will announce her resignation from cabinet and her resignation as MPP for Brampton-Springdale at caucus on Tuesday.” Several rumors have confirmed that Jeffrey holds potential interest in the mayor’s job, however an official announcement is yet to be made. Jeffrey, a former Brampton councilor, has never spared an opportunity to express her disappointment in Fennell. Inquired on Saturday at the Ontario Liberal Party’s annual general meeting if she planned to run for mayor, Jeffrey replied that “I’m the nominated Liberal candidate in Brampton-Springdale.”

However, she did not refute having interest in the job‎ and her packed hospitality suite at the convention Friday night was abuzz with mayoral speculation. An affirmation to Brampton’s thriving South Asian population, the event Bollywood-themed event included tasty Indian ‎samosas and pakoras that were a hit with ravenous Liberal delegates. Prior to Linda Jeffrey, House Leader John Milloy and Attorney General John Gerretsen have already announced that they will not be seeking re-election in the approaching election.
