It is confirmed that Councillor Bonnie Crombie will be registering in the Mississauga mayoral election on Tuesday morning. According to a member of Ms. Crombie’s campaign team, the Ward 5 councillor and former Liberal MP will certainly register this week, putting an end to the rumors spreading since more than a year that she has interest in the job.

Former councillor, MP and MPP Steve Mahoney is already in the race, which is the first one since 93-year-old Hazel McCallion announced to run again. Even though Ms. Crombie has not served a full term on council, she is still a well-known face in the city. She won a seat to the council in a 2011 by-election, when she closely defeated former councillor and MP Carolyn Parrish, who announced to run again in Ward 5 this fall. Although Ms. McCallion alleged she does not intends to endorse any candidates in the race to replace her, she is often seen accompanying Ms. Crombie at functions throughout the city.

Even though she has not formally entered the race yet, Ms. Crombie did not waste any time to comment on Mr. Mahoney’s history in politics last week, hours after her opponent had registered. Mr. Mahoney was elected to council in 1978 and went on to serve provincially and federally until 2004. Speaking about him, Ms. Crombie alleged that “I’m not a career politician, I’m a business person,” and added that “I’ve served at two levels of government. I think we need someone who has strong leadership skills, who has a vision for our city. Our city is a vibrant, bright, diverse, emerging great city.”
